A fire broke out earlier today at about 2:10pm at a unit on the third floor of a block along Rivervale Link. Upon arrival, firefighters from the Singapore Civil Defence Force observed black smoke billowing from a bedroom inside the unit. The blaze was quickly extinguished using a water jet.
Fortunately, four residents had already evacuated the unit before SCDF arrived. In total, around 50 residents from the block were evacuated safely. Four people were assessed for smoke inhalation and taken to Singapore General Hospital. Three were from the affected unit, while one was from a neighbouring apartment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire likely originated from an electrical fault in the bedroom of the affected unit. Authorities are continuing to review the incident to confirm the exact cause.
SCDF Urges Public to Follow Fire Safety Measures
The SCDF reminded the public to exercise caution with electrical appliances to prevent similar incidents. Key fire prevention tips include:
a) Avoid overloading electrical outlets with multiple appliances.
b) Switch off appliances when not in use.
c) Regularly inspect wires for fraying or cracks and replace damaged cords immediately.
d) Keep wires away from carpets, mats, and hot surfaces.
e) Use only appliances and plugs bearing the Safety Mark. Details on controlled appliances are available at www.consumerproductsafety.gov.sg.
f) Do not leave batteries or devices charging unattended for long periods or overnight.
This incident underscores the importance of electrical safety and vigilance in residential units. Residents are encouraged to maintain regular checks on their electrical systems and follow SCDF guidelines to minimise fire risks.
No fatalities were reported, and the affected unit sustained damage mainly to the bedroom area. Authorities continue to monitor safety compliance in the building.
