I’M A GUY, MY BOSS IS OVERLY TOO NICE: HE KEEPS GIVING ME GIFTS & ASK ME GO GYM

Is my boss being “bro-friendly” or is this a HR nightmare in the making?

I’m in a weird spot and honestly don’t know how to read the room. I’ve been at my current job for a bit, and my boss is—for lack of a better word—obsessively nice to me. At first, I thought he was just a great mentor, but lately, it’s getting “too much,” and I’m starting to feel incredibly uncomfortable.

For starters, he keeps giving me gifts. These aren’t just “good job on the project” gift cards; they are personal items that feel way too thoughtful for a professional setting. On top of that, he is constantly pressuring me to go to the gym with him. He’ll frame it as “health and bonding,” but he brings it up almost every day. It’s reached a point where he’s constantly asking me to “hang out” outside of office hours for drinks or dinner.

Here’s the kicker: I’m a straight guy. I have zero interest in anything beyond a paycheck and a professional reference. I don’t want to assume anyone’s orientation, but the vibe is shifting from “supportive boss” to “overly persistent suitor,” and it’s making my skin crawl.

I’m scared to say no too harshly because he is my boss and technically he’s being “nice,” but the boundary-crossing is real. If I decline the gym or the outings, the atmosphere at work gets slightly tense, like I’m rejecting a friend rather than a supervisor.

Has anyone dealt with a boss who doesn’t understand boundaries? How do I shut this down without making my work life a living hell or “offending” him? Is this grooming, or am I just overthinking a very lonely guy trying to be a “bro”?

TL;DR: Boss gives me personal gifts, demands I gym with him, and constantly asks me out. I’m straight and uncomfortable. Help.
