Thai Man’s Final Wish to Have Coyote Dancers at Funeral Fulfilled by Family
A funeral in Nakhon Si Thammarat has drawn widespread attention online after a family honoured their late relative’s unusual final request — hiring coyote dancers to perform during his farewell ceremony.
The deceased, a 59-year-old man named Winij, reportedly passed away after battling a chronic illness. Before his death, he had expressed a clear wish for his funeral to be less sorrowful, asking his family to avoid a traditional atmosphere of grief.
Instead, he wanted his final send-off to reflect his personality — light-hearted, lively, and celebratory.
Dancers Perform During Final Buddhist Funeral Rites
The performance took place on 20 April, during the final night of Buddhist chanting rites held in Ron Phibun District. The event was later shared widely online after being livestreamed, quickly gaining traction across social media platforms.
Three performers known locally as coyote dancers were brought in to entertain guests during the ceremony. Videos circulating online showed them performing energetic routines in front of the coffin, accompanied by music, while attendees watched on.
The atmosphere, though unconventional for a funeral, was reportedly aligned with the deceased’s wishes and was accepted by family members and villagers in attendance.
Family Says Tribute Reflected His Personality
According to local reports, Winij was remembered as a cheerful and sociable individual who was well-liked within his community. His family stated that the decision to include the performance was made strictly in accordance with his instructions.
He had reportedly emphasised that death should not be met with excessive sadness, as it is a natural part of life’s cycle. His belief reflected traditional Buddhist teachings on impermanence, including birth, ageing, illness, and death.
Guests at the ceremony appeared to respond with curiosity rather than discomfort, with some observing the performance while others paid respects in their own way.
