$6 for 1 veg cai png at Geylang. Is this inflation or just daylight robbery?

Walao eh, I cannot believe my eyes today. I was around Geylang just now, hungry like siao, so I went to this random coffee shop to buy cai png.

I was feeling a bit bloated from lunch so I thought, okay lor, keep it simple. I just ordered ONE VEGETABLE with rice. In my head, I was thinking maybe $2.50, max $3.00 because Geylang rental maybe a bit higher.

The uncle scoop the cabbage, put on the rice, then look at me and say: “Six dollars.”

I stood there like a sotong. I ask him again, “Uncle, $6 for one veg??”

He didn’t even blink. He just pointed at the sign that said “Economy Rice” and said “Everything expensive now, price go up already.”

SIX DOLLARS FOR CABBAGE AND RICE.

Since when did veges become a premium wagyu vegetable? I check the plate again, no hidden abalone, no scallop, not even a tiny piece of minced meat inside the vege. Just plain, oily, limp veges

If I go NTUC buy one whole cabbage is only like $1.50 and can feed a whole village. At this rate, next time I go cai png stall I need to take bank loan first or what?

I really feel like we are reaching a point where “Economy Rice” is no longer for the economy. It’s for the elite.

Seriously, anyone else kena chopped like this at Geylang recently? Or did I just walk into a 6-star Michelin cai png stall without knowing?
