Residents in Singapore can expect more rainy days during the first half of May 2026, according to the latest forecast released by the Meteorological Service Singapore.
The agency said thundery showers are expected across parts of the island on most afternoons during the opening two weeks of the month. On several days, the rain could continue into the evening, bringing temporary relief from the recent hot and humid weather conditions experienced across the city-state.
Meteorologists also warned that one or two mornings may see the arrival of Sumatra squalls, which are known to bring widespread thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall to Singapore and surrounding regions.
The wetter conditions are expected to result in above-average rainfall across most parts of the island for the first fortnight of May.
Rainy Pattern Continues From April
The latest forecast follows a similarly wet second half of April, when many areas in Singapore experienced frequent late-morning and afternoon thunderstorms.
The recurring showers are part of the inter-monsoon season, a period typically marked by unstable weather conditions, intense humidity, and short but heavy thunderstorms.
Despite the increase in rainfall, temperatures are still expected to remain relatively high. Daily maximum temperatures are forecast to range between 33°C and 35°C on most days.
On some occasions, temperatures may even climb above 35°C, especially during periods with stronger sunshine before storms develop later in the day.
The combination of high heat and humidity could continue driving demand for cooling solutions, air-conditioning systems, and energy-efficient home appliances as households attempt to stay comfortable during fluctuating weather conditions.
Possible Impact On Daily Activities
The expected rainy weather may affect outdoor plans, commuting schedules, and weekend activities throughout Singapore. Motorists and commuters could experience reduced visibility and slower traffic conditions during heavy downpours.
Those participating in outdoor fitness sessions, construction work, delivery services, or event operations may also need to monitor weather advisories closely over the coming days.
At the same time, the cooler conditions brought by thunderstorms could provide some respite from the recent heatwave-like afternoons experienced across parts of Southeast Asia.
Weather experts generally advise the public to remain hydrated despite the rainy conditions, as high humidity and warm temperatures can still contribute to heat stress.
Members of the public are also encouraged to stay updated through official weather alerts, especially during periods of intense lightning activity or gusty winds linked to Sumatra squalls.
The rainy start to May comes as climate patterns across the region continue showing increasingly unpredictable weather swings, with both extreme heat and heavy rainfall becoming more common in recent years.
