A birthday celebration in India reportedly ended in tragedy after the birthday celebrant allegedly opened fire on his friends following a dispute involving cake-smearing during the party.
According to local media reports, the shocking incident took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on the night of Apr. 25.
The man, identified as Jitu, had reportedly invited relatives and friends to celebrate his birthday. The gathering first took place at a gym before continuing at a nearby residential property later in the evening.
During the celebration, several attendees allegedly smeared cake onto Jitu’s face, a common birthday prank in parts of India and other Asian countries. However, the act reportedly angered him and led to a heated confrontation with those present.
Family members of the victims later claimed that Jitu had phoned them beforehand to complain about the incident. They allegedly attempted to calm the situation and told him the matter could be settled the next day.
Suspect Returned With Multiple Firearms
Despite this, the conflict reportedly escalated further.
Reports stated that Jitu later returned to the gathering carrying between seven and eight legally owned firearms along with a large quantity of ammunition.
Witnesses alleged that upon arriving back at the scene, he immediately began firing at those present without warning.
Police later identified the three victims as Amardeep, 32, Manish, 30, and Akash, 19.
All three men were rushed to hospital after sustaining gunshot injuries. However, they later died due to the severity of their wounds.
Authorities responded quickly after receiving emergency calls regarding the shooting.
Several individuals connected to the incident have reportedly been detained to assist investigations, though the main suspect remains at large.
Police are currently conducting a manhunt to locate Jitu and determine the full circumstances surrounding the deadly altercation.
Incident Sparks Debate Over Gun Ownership And Violent Disputes
The case has attracted widespread attention across India due to the extreme escalation from what initially appeared to be a minor social disagreement.
Incidents involving firearms at private gatherings remain relatively uncommon in many parts of India, making the case particularly shocking to the public.
The tragedy has also renewed discussions surrounding legal firearm ownership, anger management, and the increasing number of violent disputes arising from seemingly trivial incidents.
Cake-smearing during birthdays is widely practised in South Asia as a playful tradition, though critics have occasionally argued that such behaviour can cross personal boundaries or trigger confrontations.
As investigations continue, police are expected to review witness statements, forensic evidence, and the suspect’s firearm licences as part of the ongoing case.
The incident has since gone viral on regional social media platforms, with many users expressing disbelief that a birthday celebration could end in multiple deaths over what was meant to be a harmless joke.
