The incident, which was captured on dashcam footage and later uploaded to the SGRV Facebook page, has since sparked debate online about pedestrian safety, road awareness, and driving speed near schools.

According to the post, the near-miss occurred at around 2.30pm on 5 May along Pasir Ris Drive 6, near Hai Sing Catholic School.

The footage showed a car proceeding through a junction with a green traffic light when a female student in school uniform suddenly sprinted across the pedestrian crossing without stopping.

Driver Brakes Just In Time To Avoid Collision

The driver appeared to react quickly and managed to brake in time before colliding with the student.

In the video, the student could be seen running directly into the vehicle’s path, leaving very little reaction time for the motorist.

Fortunately, the vehicle stopped just in time and no injuries were reported.

The incident has since circulated widely on social media platforms, with many users expressing shock at how close the situation came to becoming a serious accident.

Some commenters criticised the student for crossing recklessly despite the traffic signal favouring vehicles, while others questioned whether the driver had been travelling too quickly near a school zone.

Several users also praised the driver’s alertness and fast reaction, saying the outcome could have been far worse.

Online Debate Over Road Safety Near Schools

The incident has reignited discussions about traffic safety around schools and pedestrian behaviour among students during busy dismissal hours.

Road safety experts frequently remind pedestrians — especially children and teenagers — to obey traffic signals and avoid rushing across roads, even when trying to catch buses or meet friends after school.

Drivers are also encouraged to remain extra cautious when travelling near educational institutions, where sudden crossings and unpredictable pedestrian behaviour are more common.

In Singapore, motorists approaching school zones are generally advised to reduce speed and stay alert during peak student movement periods.

Authorities Continue Emphasising Shared Responsibility

Although no official enforcement action was mentioned in relation to the incident, the video serves as another reminder of the importance of shared road responsibility between motorists and pedestrians.

Traffic accidents involving students can often result in severe injuries due to the vulnerability of pedestrians during collisions.

With dashcams becoming increasingly common in Singapore vehicles, more near-miss incidents are now being captured and shared online, often sparking public conversations about road discipline and traffic safety awareness.

Thankfully in this case, the driver’s quick reflexes prevented what could have turned into a tragic accident.
