A 17-year-old high school student was fatally stabbed in Gwangju, South Korea, in the early hours of May 5, in an incident that has triggered shock and renewed concerns about random violence and public safety.
The suspect, a 24-year-old man identified by his surname Jang, was later arrested and has reportedly told police he acted without a clear motive while experiencing suicidal thoughts.
The attack took place at around 12:11am along a pedestrian path near Nambu University in Gwangsan-gu, according to local reports cited by South Korean media.
The victim, who was walking home alone, was allegedly attacked without warning and suffered fatal injuries despite being rushed to hospital. She was later pronounced dead.
A male high school student who heard her scream reportedly attempted to intervene but was also attacked during the incident. Authorities said he survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
Suspect Allegedly Searched For Victim Before Attack
Investigations suggest the suspect may have driven to the area before the incident and searched for someone to target.
Police believe he parked his vehicle nearby and walked around the area before encountering the teenage victim.
After the attack, the suspect allegedly fled the scene by switching between a private car and a taxi in an apparent attempt to evade capture.
He was arrested approximately 11 hours later, around 11:24am on the same day, near his residence close to the crime scene.
The swift arrest came after police tracked his movements using available evidence and surveillance leads.
Suspect Claims He Was Contemplating Suicide
During initial questioning, Jang reportedly told police that he had been struggling with suicidal thoughts and made the decision to commit the attack during that mental state.
However, authorities have stated that no detailed or confirmed motive has been established at this stage of the investigation.
Police are continuing to examine his background, movements, and any possible psychological factors that may have contributed to the incident.
The case has raised difficult questions in South Korea about mental health support systems and how authorities can better identify individuals at risk of harming themselves or others.
