The incident, which took place during heavy rain on 8 May, quickly gained attention online after a TikTok video showing the leak began circulating on social media.

In the clip, water could be seen flowing steadily from the ceiling directly onto parts of the station used by commuters, creating what some netizens jokingly described as an “indoor waterfall”.

The viral video was uploaded by TikTok user @patoei413, who appeared to take the situation light-heartedly. A text overlay on the video humorously referenced the classic song lyric, “Raindrops keep falling on my head”.

Despite the visible leak, commuters were still seen moving through the affected area, including individuals walking up the staircase while rainwater continued dripping nearby.

The footage raised concerns among some members of the public over potential safety risks, especially during peak commuting hours when wet staircases and escalators could increase the likelihood of slips and falls.

Several netizens commented that the scene resembled the famous indoor waterfall attraction at Jewel Changi Airport, while others questioned whether drainage or maintenance issues may have contributed to the incident.

One commenter reportedly asked where the leak occurred, with the uploader confirming it took place at Potong Pasir MRT station.

Others speculated whether the issue stemmed from station design flaws, although the uploader believed the exceptionally heavy rainfall was likely the main cause.

Some social media users also claimed they had noticed similar leaking issues at Serangoon MRT Station recently, sparking broader discussions about infrastructure resilience during intense weather conditions.

SBS Transit Temporarily Closed Exit For Safety

In response to media queries, SBS Transit confirmed that the heavy downpour affected Potong Pasir MRT station at approximately 6.45pm on 8 May.

According to SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu, Exit B and a nearby lift were temporarily closed as a precautionary measure to ensure commuter safety.

Station staff reportedly redirected passengers to alternative exits while inspections and cleanup works were carried out.

Normal operations resumed at around 8.15pm after safety checks were completed. Train services on the line were not affected during the incident.

SBS Transit also apologised for the inconvenience caused to affected commuters.

Heavy Rain Continues To Test Singapore’s Infrastructure

The incident comes amid several recent cases of water leakage and flooding reported across Singapore during periods of intense rainfall.

Earlier incidents involving leaks at MRT stations and flash floods in various estates have triggered online discussions about urban drainage systems, transport infrastructure maintenance, and climate resilience planning.

Singapore has experienced increasingly intense thunderstorms in recent years, with sudden downpours occasionally overwhelming drainage systems and causing temporary disruptions in public areas.

While the leak at Potong Pasir MRT station was resolved within hours, the viral footage has continued drawing reactions online, with many Singaporeans sharing both humorous and critical comments about the unusual sight underground.
