A car accident inside a tunnel near Clarke Quay caused major disruption after a vehicle reportedly skidded on a wet road and ended up completely blocking the single-lane passage.
The incident took place on the evening of 8 May during heavy rain, with dashcam footage of the crash later circulating online and attracting widespread attention from Singapore netizens.
Many online users compared the unusual positioning of the vehicle to the infamous Ever Given Suez Canal blockage incident, where a massive container ship became lodged sideways in the Suez Canal and disrupted global shipping traffic.
Loud Bangs Heard Before Vehicle Appeared Sideways
According to footage shared on the SGRV ADMIN Facebook page, the accident occurred at around 7.18pm along Merchant Road towards the Ayer Rajah Expressway.
The video showed rainy weather conditions and wet roads as a motorcycle and a silver Toyota Corolla travelled ahead of the camcar into the tunnel.
Moments after the vehicles disappeared around a left bend, loud crashing sounds and screeching tyres could reportedly be heard echoing from inside the tunnel.
As the camcar rounded the corner shortly after, the silver Toyota was seen positioned perpendicular to the road, effectively blocking the only available lane in the tunnel.
The vehicle appeared to have sustained heavy front-end damage after colliding with the tunnel wall, while white smoke could also be seen drifting from the car.
Driver And Passenger Escape Without Serious Injuries
The collision was strong enough to deploy the vehicle’s airbags, though both occupants appeared to escape without major injuries.
Footage showed the male driver exiting the car, while a female passenger from the rear seat was also seen gathering her belongings and moving to the side of the tunnel.
The motorcycle rider travelling ahead earlier in the clip was later seen attempting to manoeuvre past the obstructing vehicle through the narrow remaining space.
No other vehicles appeared to be directly involved in the accident.
Netizens Speculate Wet Road Caused Skid
Online discussions quickly followed after the footage was uploaded, with many social media users speculating that the rainy weather and slippery road surface may have contributed to the crash.
One commenter suggested the driver may have first skidded into the left tunnel wall before rebounding across the lane and crashing into the opposite side, causing the car to spin sideways.
Others debated whether the driver should have attempted to move the vehicle to ease congestion inside the tunnel.
However, several users pointed out that once airbags are deployed, continuing to drive the car may not be advisable due to potential safety and mechanical issues.
Wet Weather Accidents Continue To Raise Safety Concerns
The accident comes amid a period of heavy rainfall across Singapore, which has led to multiple incidents involving flooding, slippery roads, and traffic disruptions in recent days.
Motorists have increasingly been reminded to reduce speed during wet weather conditions, especially when navigating tunnels, bends, and expressway exits where water accumulation can reduce tyre grip significantly.
While no serious injuries were reported in the Clarke Quay tunnel incident, the dramatic footage has continued circulating online due to the unusual way the damaged car managed to completely block the narrow tunnel lane.
