TAIPEI — A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck waters off Taiwan’s eastern coast on Monday evening, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).

The tremor occurred at approximately 7:24pm local time near Hualien County, an area frequently affected by seismic activity due to Taiwan’s location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.

CENC reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was located at 23.78 degrees north latitude and 121.70 degrees east longitude. The quake reportedly struck at a depth of around 20 kilometres beneath the seabed.

At the time of writing, there were no immediate reports of injuries, casualties, or major structural damage linked to the earthquake. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely for possible aftershocks.

Taiwan Frequently Experiences Seismic Activity

Taiwan regularly experiences earthquakes because it sits near the junction of two tectonic plates. Smaller tremors occur frequently across the island, while stronger earthquakes occasionally disrupt transport services, communications infrastructure, and daily life.

Hualien County, located along Taiwan’s mountainous eastern coastline, is particularly known for seismic activity. The region has experienced several notable earthquakes over the years due to its geological position.

Residents in parts of eastern Taiwan reportedly felt moderate shaking during Monday evening’s tremor. Social media users described brief vibrations in buildings, although no tsunami warning was immediately issued following the quake.

Earthquake monitoring agencies typically assess whether stronger aftershocks may follow after an initial tremor, especially in offshore seismic zones.

Authorities Continue Monitoring Situation

Taiwan’s emergency authorities and seismic monitoring agencies are expected to continue assessing the impact of the earthquake overnight. Offshore earthquakes can sometimes trigger smaller aftershocks in nearby coastal areas.

While Taiwan maintains strict building regulations and earthquake preparedness measures, tremors of this nature often draw public concern due to the island’s history of deadly seismic disasters.

In recent years, Taiwan has invested heavily in disaster preparedness systems, including earthquake early-warning technology, emergency response planning, and infrastructure reinforcement to reduce risks to residents and businesses.

For now, officials have not announced any significant disruptions to transport, utilities, or telecommunications services following the offshore quake.
