ANIME EVENT ORGANISERS REJECT AMOS YEE’S CLAIMS OVER SUNTEC INCIDENT, SAY FOCUS SHOULD RETURN TO ARTISTS

Organisers of a Singapore anime convention have rejected claims by controversial figure Amos Yee that they contributed to a confrontation involving him outside the event venue at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre earlier this month.

The dispute arose after Yee alleged in a social media video that organisers of Doujin Market played “a role” in the altercation by banning him from the convention and allegedly portraying him negatively to attendees. Yee, who was previously convicted in the United States on charges related to child sexual abuse material, had reportedly intended to attend the anime and creator-focused event before his ticket was cancelled.

In response, organisers of Doujin Market 2026 firmly denied publicly naming Yee in any official statement. They stated that their earlier announcement only referred to a “problematic influencer” without identifying him directly.

The organisers added that Yee should “read the post again”, emphasising that they had never publicly disclosed his name in relation to the convention ban.

ORGANISERS SAY TICKET WAS CANCELLED AFTER IDENTITY CONFIRMED

According to the organisers, Yee’s ticket was cancelled either late on May 8 or early on May 9 after his identity was verified. They said there was no communication with him until he approached convention staff at the venue itself.

Prior to the event, Doujin Market had posted on social media that they had received multiple community reports indicating that a “known problematic influencer” planned to attend the convention. The organisers stated they had taken preventive action due to concerns raised by attendees and exhibitors.

The statement also stressed that attendee safety was a priority, noting that while creative expression is welcomed within the anime and doujin community, organisers would not take risks involving real-world safety issues.

The matter escalated further after Yee appeared outside the convention venue and was later filmed being punched and kicked during a confrontation that circulated widely online. While organisers acknowledged awareness of tensions surrounding his presence, they said matters occurring outside official event grounds were beyond their direct authority.

STAFF ALLEGEDLY APPROACHED BY AGGRESSIVE GROUPS ASKING ABOUT YEE

Doujin Market also revealed that several staff members and producers were allegedly approached by groups of cosplayers demanding information about Yee’s whereabouts on the day of the convention.

According to organisers, some individuals raised their voices and attempted to film nearby staff while asking whether Yee had attended the event and when he had last been seen. Staff reportedly informed them that he had already left the ticketing area and that he was banned from entering the convention hall.

The organisers stated that security personnel had been provided with Yee’s recent photographs and instructed not to confront him directly, but instead refer any encounter to convention producers. Suntec management was also reportedly informed in advance that Yee might attempt to attend the event.

Doujin Market said that while they could manage access within convention grounds, their authority was limited in public spaces outside the venue, commonly referred to within fan communities as “lobbyconning”.

ORGANISERS HOPE ATTENTION RETURNS TO ARTISTS AND EXHIBITORS

Amid the controversy, the organisers said they hope public attention can shift back towards the artists, exhibitors, and creators who participated in the convention instead of ongoing online disputes.

They reiterated that Doujin Market exists primarily to showcase independent creators and fan artists, many of whom spent months preparing their exhibits and merchandise for the event.

The organisers also announced plans for a future contest highlighting exhibitors’ experiences during the convention, describing it as a way to thank creators for their support and contributions to the local anime and art community.

As discussions surrounding the incident continue online, the organisers maintained that public safety remains the responsibility of law enforcement authorities, while conventions themselves can only provide limited assistance within their operational scope.
