Stop being a moron and buying “packages” from beauty, hair, and nail salons. You are burning your cash

Fellow Singaporeans, we need to have a serious chat because some of you clearly have too much money and not enough common sense. Every few months, without fail, the news drops a bomb about some massive salon chain, aesthetic clinic, or nail studio suddenly vanishing overnight. The shutters go down, the WhatsApp lines go dead, and the owners escape to paradise with millions of dollars.

And who is left holding the bag? People like you, crying to CASE or the police, holding onto a prepaid package receipt worth $3,000 that is now worth absolutely nothing.

Let’s be brutally honest for a second: Stop buying salon packages. It doesn’t matter if it’s for hair treatments, facials, manicures, or slimming sessions. The moment you hand over your credit card and sign up for a 10, 20, or 50-session package just to “save 15% per session,” you are handing over a free interest-free loan to a business that could be bankrupt by next month.

Here is the reality check you need to wake up to:

1. They close down, your money is gone. Period.

The beauty industry in Singapore is notoriously volatile. High rents, worker shortages, and intense competition mean these businesses are constantly on the edge. When they fold, you are an unsecured creditor. You are at the absolute bottom of the food chain. The bank gets paid, the landlord gets paid, and your remaining 8 facial sessions vanish into thin air. Good luck getting a single cent back.

2. The math makes zero sense.

They pressure you into a package that takes 1 to 2 years to finish. Why on earth are you locking your hard-earned money into a nail salon for 24 months? Think about it logically. Next year, the salon might close down, the good stylist you actually liked will quit, or—let’s be real—you might not even be around, or your lifestyle changes completely. You are tying up your cash flow for a hypothetical future discount.

3. The “Hard Sell” nightmare.

The moment you buy a package, your leverage as a customer is completely dead. They already have your money. When you turn up for your “prepaid” session, they will spent the entire 60 minutes hard-selling you another upgraded package, or telling you your skin/hair condition has worsened and you need to top up cash. If you say no, the service suddenly drops to a sub-par standard. You end up dreading your appointments.

The Golden Rule Going Forward:

If a salon cannot survive on a pay-per-use model, they do not deserve your business. If they pressure you, stand up and walk out. No discount is worth the stress of wondering if the shop will still be there next month.

Be smart, keep your money in your own bank account, and stop falling for the oldest trap in the retail book. You’ve been warned.
