Lately cannot take it anymore, need to vent here because my family group chat is literally exploding.
My cousin just turned 18. Legal age already, correct? First thing he do is not go buy 4D or go clubbing. No, he straight away go and get a tattoo. When he showed us, my auntie almost get heart attack, but the best part is his justification. He tell us, “Oh, it’s art, it’s self-expression.”
Art your head lah.
After we grill him a bit more, the truth come out. He only get it because his whole poly clique got tattoos, and he don’t want to feel left out. The ultimate FOMO. Literally just peer pressure at its finest. Everyone get, so he must get. If his friends go jump down Marina Bay Sands, is he going to jump also? effing stupid, I swear.
The most ironical thing? He don’t even like the design that much! It’s some generic tribal or gothic wording asset that he picked off Pinterest last minute. And you know what is the funniest part? He secretly confided in me that when the needle poke him, he actually cried. Cried, bro. Want to act so pai kia (bad boy) and edgy, want to show off to his friends that he is cool, but cannot even handle the pain. Sit on the chair only start to regret and tear up. If you so weak, don’t go and find trouble and pay money to torture yourself, can or not?
I really don’t understand this modern youth mentality. Nowaday why people must always put tattoo just to “show” or to belong? Last time people get tattoo because got real meaning, or okay fine, real passion for the art style. Now it’s like a checklist item to become an “aesthetic” influencer or to fit into some trendy subculture.
He pay a few hundred dollars of his hard-earned part-time grab food money just to get something permanent on his skin that he already regrets. Next time go workforce then he know. Interview wear long sleeve every day then he cry again. Now he stuck with a permanent drawing on his arm just so he can sit with the “cool kids” at the void deck. Smh, honestly, modern kids got too much money and too little brains.
