A rat was recently spotted roaming inside a restaurant at Kampung Admiralty, with a netizen also alleging that more rodents were seen at the hawker centre upstairs.

The incident surfaced after a video was shared in the Complaint Singapore Facebook group on 19 May. The clip showed a rat perched on a ledge near the entrance of Yassin Kampung before it scurried across the area while occasionally stopping to sniff around.

Kampung Admiralty is known as an integrated development featuring elderly housing, healthcare facilities, retail shops, dining outlets, and communal spaces. The sighting quickly drew attention online, with some netizens expressing concern over the growing rat problem in Singapore’s food establishments.

Netizens Concerned About Hygiene And Pest Issues

Some commenters claimed rats have become increasingly common around eateries and hawker centres, despite cleaning efforts by stall operators. One Facebook user even alleged they experienced stomach discomfort after dining at the hawker centre, though there is no confirmation linking it to the incident.

Others reacted more light-heartedly, joking that a “kampung” naturally comes with rats. Another netizen suggested the reduced number of stray cats could be contributing to the rodent issue.

The video quickly spread online as Singaporeans discussed ongoing concerns surrounding food hygiene, pest control services, and public health standards in busy dining areas.

SFA Investigating Matter

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) confirmed that it is investigating the matter. The agency reminded food operators that maintaining food hygiene and pest control is part of their responsibility.

SFA added that it takes food safety seriously and may take enforcement action if investigations uncover sufficient evidence of lapses. Members of the public are also encouraged to report poor food hygiene practices through the agency’s official feedback channels.

The incident comes amid continued efforts by authorities to tackle Singapore’s rodent problem. Earlier this year, the National Environment Agency (NEA) and SFA reportedly carried out over 1,300 enforcement actions related to rat-related lapses across the island.
