A taxi driver in Singapore is trying to track down the rightful owner of a luxury Rolex watch allegedly worth around S$120,000 after it was left behind in her cab.
The watch, believed to be a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, was reportedly discovered after one of her recent trips. According to the driver, she later visited a Rolex boutique in Orchard Road, where staff informed her that a similar model was being sold at approximately S$120,000.
Shocked by the estimated value of the timepiece, the driver decided to post about the discovery online in hopes of reuniting the watch with its owner. However, she has also become extremely cautious about releasing it to the wrong person.
The cabbie explained that she intentionally withheld details about the trip and the passenger because she wanted to use that information as a way to verify any claims made by potential owners. She said she feared scammers or opportunists might attempt to falsely claim ownership of the expensive luxury watch.
According to the driver, her taxi company’s lost-and-found department informed her that someone had already reported losing a watch. However, she claimed that some of the information provided by the claimant appeared inconsistent with the details she had.
Because of this, she became suspicious that the individual may not be the genuine owner of the Rolex.
Taxi Company Allegedly Pressures Driver To Return Watch
The situation reportedly escalated after the taxi driver received an email from her company instructing her to hand over the item to the office by a specified deadline.
The email allegedly warned that failing to do so could result in a review of her hiring agreement with the company.
Still, the driver remained hesitant. She said she first wanted reassurance that proper ownership verification procedures would be followed before the Rolex was released to anyone.
Given the watch’s massive estimated value, the cabbie argued that a simple police report might not be enough proof of ownership.
She shared that Rolex staff had told her that documents such as a guarantee card or original purchase receipt would likely serve as stronger proof that the claimant truly owned the watch.
The driver also attempted to contact Rolex Singapore directly to see if the serial number or registration details could help identify the rightful owner. However, according to her, the company declined to get involved and instead advised her to surrender the watch to the police.
Netizens Praise Driver For Honesty Amid Luxury Watch Drama
The story has attracted attention online, with many Singaporeans praising the taxi driver for her honesty and caution.
Luxury watches such as Rolex Daytonas are considered highly sought-after investment assets, with some rare models appreciating significantly in value over time. In Singapore’s booming luxury goods and wealth management market, premium watches have become increasingly associated with alternative investments and high-net-worth collectors.
Many netizens commented that it would have been easy for someone to quietly keep the expensive timepiece, making the driver’s efforts to locate the owner especially commendable.
Others, however, felt the safest route would simply be to hand the Rolex directly to the police and allow the authorities to handle the verification process.
For now, the mystery surrounding the forgotten Rolex remains unsolved, as the taxi driver continues her search for the person she believes truly owns the six-figure luxury watch.
