Van Driver Dies After Being Trapped In Seat Following Crash With Bus In Woodlands

A 54-year-old van driver has died after being trapped inside his vehicle following a collision with a bus along Woodlands Avenue 3.

The fatal accident happened on 20 May at around 1.25pm near the junction of Woodlands Avenue 3 and Woodlands Avenue 1, close to Marsiling MRT station.

Photos circulating online showed a heavily damaged yellow van stopped in the centre lane beside a green private bus. The front portion of the van appeared badly crushed, with its bumper partially torn off and the windscreen shattered from the impact.

Debris from the crash could also be seen scattered across the road as traffic built up around the accident scene.

Witnesses in a Telegram motorists’ chat group said multiple Traffic Police vehicles arrived shortly after the collision, drawing attention from passing drivers during the afternoon rush hour.

Driver Found Trapped Inside Van

According to the Singapore Police Force, the accident involved a bus and a van travelling in the direction of Woodlands Square.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said emergency responders found the van driver trapped in his seat upon arrival.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic rescue equipment to free the man from the wreckage before paramedics could attend to him.

The driver was reportedly unconscious when he was pulled from the vehicle.

He was later conveyed to Woodlands Hospital for emergency treatment.

Despite efforts to save him, the 54-year-old man subsequently died from his injuries.

No other injuries were immediately reported following the crash.

Investigations Into Fatal Crash Ongoing

Police investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.

The accident has once again raised concerns among Singapore motorists over the dangers faced by van and delivery drivers who spend long hours on the road daily.

In recent months, Singapore has seen several serious traffic accidents involving commercial vehicles, including vans, lorries and motorcycles.

Many netizens expressed condolences online after news of the driver’s death surfaced, with some commenting on the severe damage sustained by the van despite the bus appearing to suffer little visible impact.

Others also reminded fellow motorists to stay alert on the roads and avoid distractions while driving, especially during peak traffic periods in busy industrial and residential areas such as Woodlands.

The fatal collision caused temporary congestion in the area while emergency services conducted rescue operations and cleared the damaged vehicles from the roadway.
