The mystery behind the now-viral “turtle car” incident at a Woodlands multi-storey car park may finally have an explanation.
A Singapore tow truck operator has shared what he claims was told to him by the owner of the vehicle that overturned onto its side earlier this week, sparking countless jokes, memes and theories online.
The unusual accident, which happened inside a multi-storey car park at Woodlands Drive 52, left many Singaporeans scratching their heads. With the car park’s narrow ramps and low speeds typically involved, many wondered how a vehicle could possibly end up lying on its side.
According to the tow trucker, the answer may have been a simple but costly pedal mix-up.
Driver Allegedly Hit Accelerator Instead Of Brake

In a video posted on social media, the tow trucker explained that he had transported the damaged vehicle to a workshop after recovery works were completed.
During the journey, he said he spoke to the car owner’s husband, who allegedly revealed what happened moments before the accident.
According to the account, the driver’s wife was rushing to send their children for tuition when the incident occurred.
As she approached the ramp inside the multi-storey car park, she allegedly stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.
The vehicle reportedly surged forward, mounted a kerb and overturned due to the momentum generated from the sudden acceleration.
The tow trucker further claimed that the vehicle’s rear bumper struck a wall before the car eventually came to rest on its left side, matching photographs that circulated widely online after the incident.
While these claims have not been officially verified by authorities, they provide a possible explanation for the unusual crash that captured the attention of netizens across Singapore.
Husband Reportedly Upset Over Incident
The tow trucker also described the husband as visibly distressed during the journey to the workshop.
Apart from the shock of seeing the family car overturned, the financial implications were reportedly significant.
Vehicle recovery operations involving overturned cars typically require specialised equipment and manpower, making them considerably more expensive than standard towing services.
Despite the cost, the husband allegedly settled the recovery bill before the vehicle was sent for repairs and inspection.
The incident quickly became one of Singapore’s most talked-about motoring stories this week, with many social media users expressing disbelief that such an accident could happen inside a car park.
Netizens Focus On One Unexpected Detail
While many were interested in the mechanics of the accident, others found humour in a different aspect of the story.
Several social media users joked that despite the dramatic crash, the children apparently still made it to their tuition classes.
Comments flooded online platforms, with Singaporeans offering humorous theories and playful reactions to the now-famous “turtle car”.
The original accident occurred at around 6.50pm on June 2 at Block 622A Woodlands Drive 52.
Police previously confirmed that the 41-year-old female driver suffered injuries but declined medical conveyance to hospital.
Investigations are still ongoing.
The incident has also sparked renewed discussions about pedal misapplication, a driving error that has been responsible for numerous accidents worldwide, particularly in situations involving sudden panic or confusion between the accelerator and brake pedals.
