A 25-year-old van driver was arrested after a police pursuit that began along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) and ended in Tampines on the afternoon of Jun. 7.
The incident unfolded at around 2:05pm when police officers on patrol spotted a vehicle of interest travelling along the PIE towards the Bedok Reservoir Flyover.
According to the Singapore Police Force, officers initiated a pursuit after identifying the vehicle and subsequently tracked it to Simei Road.
The pursuit ended when police successfully intercepted the van and signalled the driver to stop.
Videos of the incident quickly circulated on social media, showing multiple police vehicles surrounding a black van on the roadside.
Several officers were seen approaching the driver before placing him in handcuffs.
Multiple Police Cars Involved In Operation
Footage from the scene showed a police fast response vehicle positioned diagonally in front of the van while another police car blocked it from behind.
Three officers were seen restraining the driver, while another officer directed traffic away from the affected lane to ensure the safety of other road users.
Additional police vehicles later arrived at the scene, with reports indicating that at least four more fast response cars joined the operation.
The arrest attracted the attention of passing motorists and nearby members of the public due to the large police presence.
Despite the dramatic nature of the pursuit, no injuries were reported.
Police confirmed that the driver was arrested for an alleged rash act and for failing to provide a breath specimen for analysis.
Vehicle Identified As Vehicle Of Interest
Authorities did not disclose the specific reason why the van had been classified as a vehicle of interest.
However, such vehicles are commonly linked to ongoing investigations, outstanding traffic matters, enforcement operations or other suspicious activities requiring police attention.
The Singapore Police Force has previously stated that its next-generation fast response vehicles are equipped with advanced automated number plate recognition technology.
The system allows officers to automatically identify vehicles of interest while on patrol, helping to improve operational response times and enhance public safety.
Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
No further details regarding the driver or potential additional offences have been released at this time.
