Geylang Stall Loses Over S$20,000 After Staff Forgets to Bring Donation Boxes Indoors

A food stall in Singapore suffered losses exceeding S$20,000 after 10 charity donation boxes were allegedly stolen overnight when an employee accidentally left them outside after closing.

According to Shin Min Daily News, The incident took place in Geylang and has left the stall owner devastated, as the missing funds were intended for several charitable organisations that rely on public contributions.

According to reports, the theft was discovered in the early hours of Jun. 14 when the stall manager received a phone call from an employee informing her that the donation boxes had disappeared.

Donation Boxes Contained Funds for Multiple Charities

The stall manager, identified as Zhu, explained that the donation boxes collected money on behalf of several non-profit organisations, including medical and welfare groups that serve vulnerable communities in Singapore.

The boxes were reportedly gathered by each organisation once a month, with each box typically containing between S$2,000 and S$3,000.

Based on those estimates, the total amount stolen is believed to be between S$20,000 and S$30,000.

Zhu said she felt deeply troubled by the incident, especially because the money belonged to charitable organisations rather than the business itself.

She expressed disappointment that donations intended to help others had become the target of criminals.

Previous Theft Prompted Additional Security Measures

This was not the first time the stall had experienced such an incident.

Zhu revealed that another theft occurred about 10 years ago, prompting her to invest nearly S$3,000 in customised steel security structures to better protect the donation boxes.

In addition, strict procedures were implemented to ensure all donation boxes were brought indoors every night after business hours.

Unfortunately, those measures failed on this occasion due to an unexpected human error.

Staff Member Forgot to Secure the Boxes

According to Zhu, the employee responsible for closing the stall on Jun. 13 was feeling unwell and inadvertently forgot to move the donation boxes inside.

The staff member later apologised repeatedly and reportedly felt extremely guilty about the oversight.

While Zhu acknowledged the mistake was unintentional, she lamented that a single lapse in routine had resulted in significant losses affecting numerous charitable organisations.

She added that despite years of vigilance, it only took one missed step for the theft to occur.

Suspected Thief May Have Planned the Heist

Zhu believes the perpetrator had studied the premises beforehand and deliberately exploited blind spots in the shop’s CCTV coverage.

Because the theft occurred after all neighbouring stalls had closed, the suspect was able to avoid attracting attention.

The stall owner also learnt that a trolley normally used by a nearby coffee shop to collect used crockery had gone missing around the same time.

She suspects the thief may have used the trolley to transport the donation boxes away quickly and efficiently.

Police investigations are currently ongoing.

Incident Highlights Risks Facing Charity Collections

The case has sparked discussions about the security of physical donation boxes, particularly those left in publicly accessible areas.

Although many businesses partner with charities to encourage public giving, such collection methods remain vulnerable to theft if not properly secured.

The incident also highlights how human error, even when unintentional, can have serious consequences when handling charitable funds.

For Zhu, the biggest concern is not the financial loss to her business but the impact on the organisations that depend on these donations to continue supporting those in need.

As investigations continue, authorities have not yet announced whether any suspects have been identified or if the missing funds can be recovered.
