PRC WOMAN DEMANDS REFUND AFTER DISCOVERING S$18K ‘RARE’ LV BAG MAY HAVE BEEN A DISPLAY ITEM

A luxury shopping experience in China has turned into a costly dispute after a woman demanded a full refund for a S$18,064 Louis Vuitton handbag that she believes was misrepresented by store staff.

The woman, identified only by her surname Zhang, said she purchased the ostrich skin bag while on holiday in Hangzhou with her boyfriend on Jun. 8.

According to Chinese media reports, a sales associate aggressively promoted the bag, claiming it was the latest style and that only two pieces existed in the entire country.

Despite already purchasing a handbag two months earlier, Zhang said staff continued persuading her to buy it.

She alleged that once staff discovered her boyfriend would be paying for the purchase, several male employees gathered around them, making it difficult to walk away from the sale.

Her boyfriend eventually paid CN¥94,500 (around S$18,064) as a birthday gift.

Woman Notices Colour Difference After Returning To Hotel

The situation took a turn later that evening when Zhang was filming a video of the bag to show her friends.

She noticed that one section on the side appeared noticeably different in colour from the rest of the handbag.

Concerned, she immediately contacted the store and was told that the variation was a natural characteristic of ostrich leather rather than a manufacturing defect.

Staff offered to exchange the item and even arranged for another bag of the same model to be brought in from a different store.

However, Zhang said she no longer wanted an exchange.

Social Media Search Raises More Questions

After searching for the handbag on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, Zhang discovered posts dating back to December 2025 that appeared to show the same bag displayed at Louis Vuitton boutiques in several cities.

She believes the bag had been repeatedly handled and tried on by numerous customers over several months.

According to Zhang, she would not have spent almost CN¥100,000 if she had known the bag was potentially a display item.

She said she expected to receive a brand-new luxury product instead.

Store Refuses Refund, Offers Exchange Instead

Zhang returned to the boutique to request a refund, but the store declined her request.

One reason cited was that her boyfriend’s initials had already been engraved onto the dust bag label after the purchase.

The store instead offered her the option of exchanging the handbag for another Louis Vuitton product of equal or higher value.

Zhang rejected the offer, saying she no longer wanted to continue shopping with the brand.

The handbag has since been sent for further assessment to determine whether the colour inconsistency is considered a defect.

The incident has since sparked debate online about luxury retail sales tactics, transparency and whether customers are always fully informed before making expensive purchases.

Many internet users have pointed out that while display pieces are common in luxury boutiques, consumers generally expect staff to clearly disclose this information before completing a purchase, especially when exclusivity and rarity are being used as selling points.
