Indonesian Maid With Husband And 6 Children Back Home Jailed For Marrying Singaporean Man
A 51-year-old Indonesian domestic helper has been sentenced to two months’ jail after marrying a Singaporean man despite already being legally married and having six children in Indonesia.
The woman, pleaded guilty to one count of bigamy. Another charge relating to falsely declaring her marital status was taken into consideration during sentencing.
According to Zaobao, The case came to light after authorities discovered that her first marriage had never been legally dissolved before she entered into a second marriage in Singapore.
Married Since 1992
Court documents revealed that she married her Indonesian husband in a Catholic ceremony on Aug. 6, 1992.
The couple went on to have six children together, and the marriage remained legally valid throughout the years.
Between 2010 and 2012, She left Indonesia to work overseas, leaving her husband and children behind.
Despite remaining legally married, she later entered into a relationship with a Singaporean man while working as a domestic helper in Singapore.
Relationship Led To Marriage
In early 2025, She met a Singaporean man online and the pair eventually decided to get married.
On July 25, 2025, the Singaporean man submitted a marriage application to the Registry of Marriages (ROM), declaring that She was single.
According to reports, he was aware that she was already married at the time the application was submitted.
The couple later appeared before ROM on Sept. 2, 2025, where She allegedly declared that she had never been married before.
Their marriage was officially registered on Oct. 27, 2025.
Investigation Triggered By Tip-Off
The matter came to the attention of authorities after ROM alerted the police to a possible case of bigamy.
Following investigations, She was arrested on Apr. 15, 2026.
Prosecutors argued that the offence was serious because she had repeatedly misrepresented her marital status during the marriage application process and statutory declaration.
They also noted that her actions affected her husband and six children in Indonesia.
Court Hands Down Jail Sentence
The prosecution sought a jail term of between three and four months, citing the deliberate nature of the offence.
However, the defence requested a lighter sentence of one to two months, arguing that She had entered the marriage out of genuine affection for the Singaporean man.
The defence also highlighted that the marriage lasted only a few months and that she had admitted to her wrongdoing by pleading guilty.
After considering the facts of the case, the court sentenced she to two months’ imprisonment for committing bigamy.
