Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has reaffirmed his willingness to resign from the Cabinet if former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak is released from prison, stressing that the country’s judicial system must maintain its credibility and integrity.
Nga, who is also the deputy chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), made the remarks in a Facebook post on July 12 while responding to calls for his resignation.
The minister referred to comments he had previously made during an exclusive interview with local media, saying his position was consistent with the principles he has upheld throughout his career as a lawyer.
According to Nga, the rule of law and public confidence in the judiciary are fundamental pillars that must be defended regardless of political considerations.
He argued that if Najib, who was convicted by the courts, were to be released without serving a punishment proportionate to his offences, it would undermine public trust in Malaysia’s legal system.
Concerns Over Judicial Credibility
Nga pointed to the ongoing financial burden linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, stating that Malaysians are still carrying liabilities amounting to RM51.4 billion as a result of the case.
He said allowing Najib to avoid the full consequences of his conviction would send the wrong message and weaken confidence in the country’s justice system.
“If such a situation occurs, I am prepared to resign from my ministerial position in order to uphold the integrity of Malaysia’s judicial system,” he said.
Nga emphasised that his stance was not driven by personal grievances or political rivalry.
“This is not about personal animosity. It is a matter of principle,” he wrote, adding that he remains committed to the position he has consistently maintained.
He concluded by saying that defending what he believes to be right gives him the courage to speak openly on the issue.
Congratulates Barisan Nasional On Johor Election Victory
In the same post, Nga congratulated Barisan Nasional (BN) on its victory in the Johor state election.
He said the outcome reflected the democratic will of voters and should be respected by all parties involved.
According to Nga, securing a two-thirds majority in the state assembly comes with significant responsibility, and he urged BN to govern with integrity and accountability.
Despite Pakatan Harapan’s defeat in the election, Nga thanked supporters, campaign workers and volunteers who had worked tirelessly throughout the campaign period.
He expressed confidence that the opposition coalition would continue serving the public and remain committed to its long-term goals.
“Although we did not win this time, there will be other opportunities ahead. Pakatan Harapan will continue to work hard and serve the people and the nation,” he said.
