TP Tows Away 2 Lorries During Islandwide Crackdown On Missing Speed Limiters

The Traffic Police (TP) towed away two lorries during a two-day islandwide enforcement operation targeting companies that failed to comply with mandatory speed limiter requirements.

The operation was conducted on July 1 and 2, 2026, shortly after a statutory deadline came into effect for certain categories of lorries to be fitted with speed limiters.

According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), extensive outreach efforts had been carried out since early 2025 to remind lorry owners about the requirement. These included SMS notifications, emails, letters and face-to-face engagements ahead of the deadline.

Two Lorries Found Non-Compliant

The latest deadline, which took effect on July 1, 2026, applies to lorries registered before Jan. 1, 2018 with a maximum laden weight (MLW) between 3,501kg and 5,000kg.

As of the deadline, authorities said about 1.1 per cent of affected lorries had yet to submit records confirming that speed limiters had been installed.

During checks conducted at selected company premises, TP officers inspected installation records and verified compliance with the regulations. Two lorries were subsequently towed away for further investigation after they were found to be non-compliant.

Under current laws, failing to ensure that a required speed limiter is fitted can result in a fine of up to S$1,000, a jail term of up to three months, or both.

More Enforcement Action Expected

Traffic Police said enforcement efforts will continue against companies and vehicle owners who fail to comply with the requirements.

Affected companies will receive notices requiring them to present their vehicles for inspection at Authorised Inspection Centres. Lorries that do not have the required speed limiters installed will fail the inspection and may face further enforcement action.

Authorities also stressed that companies and owners who only install speed limiters after the stipulated deadline may still be penalised.

In addition, non-compliant lorries are not legally allowed to be driven on public roads, while their road tax cannot be renewed. Vehicle owners may also face reduced insurance coverage if the vehicles do not meet regulatory requirements.

Next Deadline Falls On Jan. 1, 2027

The speed limiter requirement already applies to heavy vehicles with a maximum laden weight exceeding 12,000kg, public service vehicles exceeding 10,000kg, and lorries registered before Jan. 1, 2018 with an MLW between 3,501kg and 12,000kg.

For lorries registered on or after Jan. 1, 2018 with an MLW between 5,001kg and 12,000kg, the next statutory deadline for speed limiter installation will take effect on Jan. 1, 2027.

Traffic Police urged companies and vehicle owners to make the necessary arrangements early and comply with Singapore’s traffic regulations, warning that firm action will be taken against those who endanger road safety through non-compliance.

The police also noted that penalties for such offences are expected to increase significantly following the passage of the Land Transport and Related Matters Bill, with the maximum fine set to rise from S$1,000 to S$10,000 later this year.
