A 67-year-old man has died after the car he was driving collided with the rear of a public bus in Ang Mo Kio on the morning of Jul. 16.
The accident occurred at around 8:30am near a bus stop beside Block 246B along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1.
Emergency services were called to the scene after the collision, which left the elderly driver unconscious. He was later pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.
Loud Crash Heard By Nearby Resident
A resident living in the area told Shin Min Daily News that he was alerted to the incident after hearing a loud bang from below his block.
When he looked outside, he saw a red car that had crashed into the back of a bus that was preparing to move off from the bus stop.
The force of the impact reportedly caused the vehicle’s airbags to deploy.
According to the resident, several passers-by quickly rushed over to help the occupants of the car. A group of men reportedly worked together to open the vehicle’s doors and assist both the driver and a female passenger out of the damaged car.
The driver was said to have been wearing a light blue shirt at the time of the accident.
Driver Collapsed After Exiting Vehicle
Witnesses claimed that the driver initially appeared capable of moving on his own after being removed from the car.
However, moments later, he reportedly collapsed and lost consciousness, prompting concern among those at the scene.
The female passenger, believed to be 61 years old, appeared shaken by the incident and sat down nearby while members of the public attended to her.
One witness speculated that the driver may have experienced a sudden medical emergency while behind the wheel, although the exact cause of the crash has not been determined.
Emergency responders subsequently arrived and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) to the driver at the roadside.
Police Investigations Ongoing
The Singapore Police Force confirmed that the 67-year-old male driver was conveyed to hospital unconscious following the accident.
Despite medical efforts, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The 61-year-old female passenger travelling in the same vehicle was taken conscious to hospital for treatment.
Police officers cordoned off the area while investigations were carried out.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the collision was caused by a medical episode, driver error or any other factor.
Investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
The accident serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant on the roads and seeking immediate medical attention if signs of illness or discomfort arise while driving.
