A 22-year-old British national has been convicted over an incident involving a Singapore private-hire driver who suffered a serious head injury and later passed away approximately one year after the attack.

The case, which stemmed from an altercation outside a residence in Sunset Way in June 2024, concluded with the accused pleading guilty to a reduced charge after prosecutors amended the original allegation.

The victim, a 66-year-old private-hire driver, sustained a fractured skull during the incident and required emergency medical treatment. Although he later died in 2025, the court heard that evidence was insufficient to conclusively establish that the accused had intentionally caused grievous hurt.

Drinking Session Before Ride Home

Court proceedings revealed that Oruche Morgan Fidelis had spent the evening consuming alcohol before booking a ride home.

On Jun. 12, 2024, Fidelis first accompanied his employer and two clients to a bar, where he drank three pints of beer. He later met his girlfriend and several friends, consuming another two pints during the gathering.

At around 10.30pm, he booked a private-hire vehicle from Asia Square to return to his residence at Sunset Way.

The vehicle arrived at approximately 10.58pm. Upon reaching the destination, the driver discovered that Fidelis had fallen asleep in the back seat and attempted to wake him.

According to court findings, Fidelis reacted negatively after being roused from his sleep. During the confrontation that followed, the elderly driver fell and struck his head, suffering a severe skull fracture.

The injured driver was subsequently transported to the National University Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Surveillance Footage Played Key Role

As the driver had passed away by the time the matter was heard in court, the judge noted that objective evidence was limited.

One of the most significant pieces of evidence came from surveillance cameras installed at a nearby private residence overlooking the area where the incident occurred.

Footage reportedly showed Fidelis waking up, calmly removing his headphones and then moving quickly towards the driver.

The court heard that while medical experts confirmed the existence of a skull fracture, they were unable to determine with certainty the exact mechanism that caused the injury.

Judicial findings indicated that the fracture could have resulted from several possible scenarios, including a push, a punch, a stumble or the impact of the fall itself.

Original Charge Reduced

Because of the uncertainty surrounding how the injury was inflicted, prosecutors faced difficulties proving beyond reasonable doubt that Fidelis had intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

The judge reportedly stated that the available evidence did not allow the prosecution to eliminate all reasonable alternative explanations regarding the circumstances of the injury.

As a result, the original charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt could not be sustained.

The prosecution subsequently amended the charge to one of using criminal force. Under the revised charge, Fidelis admitted to carrying out an aggressive act by raising his left hand towards the driver during the confrontation.

He pleaded guilty to the amended offence.

Sentencing Scheduled For August

Following the guilty plea, the court adjourned the matter for sentencing.

Fidelis is expected to return to court on Aug. 4, when the judge will determine the appropriate punishment for the offence.

The case has attracted attention due to the tragic outcome involving the elderly driver, whose fatal injuries occurred after what began as a routine private-hire trip.

The sentencing hearing is expected to address the circumstances surrounding the incident and the level of culpability attached to the amended charge.
