Before anyone asks in the comments, I won’t say which agency, division, location, or rank I am under. Just take it that part of my job scope involves enforcement raids on illegal massage parlors and unlicensed wellness joints across Singapore.
We received a tip-off regarding an establishment operating somewhere in the heartlands. Standard procedure: team went in, secured the premises, and controlled the rooms. Everything was routine until I opened one of the cubicles in the back.
Standing right there in a total panic, wearing nothing but a towel around his waist, was my female best friend’s husband.
For context, my best friend (let’s call her Sarah) and her husband have been married for around three years. They just collected their BTO keys last year and are currently pouring their life savings into renovations. To everyone in our social circle, this guy always seemed like the ultimate green-flag husband—polite, down-to-earth, drives her everywhere, and constantly posting sweet couple photos on Instagram.
When our eyes met, his face went completely white. He literally froze like a statue. He knew instantly that I recognized him, and I knew instantly what he was doing with the scantily clad lady sitting on the edge of the bed behind him.
Because of operational protocol, I couldn’t break character or say anything personal on the spot. I just kept my professional face on, logged the headcount, and handled the process strictly according to standard operating procedures. He didn’t say a single word to me the entire time—just stared at the floor looking like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole.
Now I am stuck in a huge dilemma, and I haven’t been able to sleep properly for days.
The Dilemma
- Friendship Loyalty: Sarah is like family to me; we’ve been close since secondary school. If my own partner were paying for sexual services behind my back, I would want my best friend to tell me immediately. She is about to move into a new house with this guy. If she finds out years later after having kids, the damage will be infinitely worse.
- Professional Boundaries: Technically, this information was obtained while I was on duty conducting official operations. I don’t want to risk my career, official confidentiality protocols, or breach conduct rules over a personal matter.
- The Shooting the Messenger Risk: What if I tell her, he denies it or spins some crazy cover story, and she chooses to believe him over me? Or worse, what if it completely destroys her mental health right when she’s supposed to be starting a new chapter in her life?
TL;DR: Kicked open a massage parlor door during an official enforcement raid and caught my secondary school best friend’s husband inside with a chicken. Now torn between keeping my mouth shut for professional reasons or telling my best friend before she moves into her BTO with him.
Brothers and sisters of Reddit, what would you do if you were in my shoes? Confront the husband privately to force his hand, or tell the friend directly?
