A tragic incident at a public hospital in India has sparked outrage after a ceiling fan reportedly fell onto a patient lying in his hospital bed, with the man dying several hours later.
The incident took place at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in New Delhi, where 42-year-old Akbar was receiving treatment for an existing medical condition. According to reports, the accident happened at around 9.30pm on July 18 while he was resting in Ward 27.
Witnesses said the ceiling fan suddenly detached from the ceiling and landed directly on Akbar’s abdomen, leaving patients and visitors in shock.
Family Alleges Negligence by Hospital
According to eyewitnesses, a loud crash was heard before the fan struck the patient. One visitor, who said he witnessed the incident firsthand, claimed he immediately recorded the aftermath on his mobile phone.
He alleged that Akbar had been in stable condition before the accident and criticised hospital staff for their response. The witness also claimed there was an attempt to suggest the fan had struck a nurse instead of the patient, insisting he personally saw it hit Akbar.
The same witness accused the hospital of poor maintenance, alleging that many air-conditioning units and ceiling fans in the wards were already faulty, leaving patients dependent on the remaining working fans despite the hot and humid weather.
Akbar’s relatives have since called for a full investigation, arguing that the hospital failed to properly maintain its facilities and did not provide timely medical assistance after the accident.
Some families of other patients also alleged that the hospital had experienced previous safety and medical errors, raising further concerns over standards at the facility.
Hospital Says Existing Illness Caused Death
Despite the allegations, the hospital has denied that the fallen ceiling fan caused Akbar’s death.
In a statement, hospital officials said the patient succumbed to complications from his pre-existing medical condition and maintained that the ceiling fan incident was unrelated to his death.
The differing accounts have prompted calls for authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the hospital’s maintenance practices met safety standards and whether the patient’s treatment after the accident was adequate.
The case has attracted widespread attention in India, with many questioning the condition of ageing public healthcare infrastructure and whether more stringent maintenance checks are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
