Hawker uncle remembers my order for 10 years, but still doesn’t know my name. Always calls me “Ah Boy”

So I’ve been eating at this minced meat noodle stall in my neighbourhood hawker centre since I was fresh out of NS. Literally 10 whole years. Through my first job, my heartbreak, my promotions, and now my impending hair loss, this stall has been the one constant in my life.

Yesterday, I walked up during the peak lunch hour. Line was at least 15 people deep, heat was insane, and Uncle was sweating into his towel. The moment I stepped up to the front, before I could even open my mouth, he looks up, points his noodle strainer at me and shouts:

“Ah Boy! Meepok dry, no vinegar, extra chili, no bean sprouts, add extra pork liver, take away right?”

100% spot on. Didn’t even hesitate. Didn’t miss a single customization. I was genuinely touched. How many people in your life remember your exact emotional baggage and your noodle preferences without you saying a word?

So I thought, okay, today is the day. We have built mutual respect. We have a connection. It’s time to move past the customer-vendor boundary.

While he was packing my noodles, I grinned and said, “Uncle, you remember my order so well! By the way, my name is actually—”

Before I could finish, he slammed the styrofoam container onto the counter, handed me my packet, and went: “Okay $5.50! Next! Ah Boy, take chili yourself ah!”

Bro. I am 31 years old. I have a 30-year HDB mortgage, a receding hairline, and back pain when I sleep wrongly. But to this man, I will forever be “Ah Boy”.

I realized then that he doesn’t need to know my name. In Singapore hawker lore, “Ah Boy” isn’t a lack of respect; it’s a title of affection. If he ever actually calls me by my real name, I think the meepok will instantly lose its magic.

Anyone else got a hawker uncle or auntie who knows your soul, but treats your real identity like classified government info?
