Elderly Man Who Died in MacPherson Flat Fire to Receive Welfare Funeral After Family Declines Responsibility

A 70-year-old man who died following a fire in his MacPherson flat will be laid to rest with assistance from a welfare organisation after his family reportedly declined to identify his body or make funeral arrangements.

The fatal blaze broke out in the early hours of Jul. 28 at Block 39 Circuit Road. Emergency responders attended the incident at around 2am, where the elderly resident, who lived alone on the ninth floor, was later pronounced dead, Shin Min Daily News reported.

According to reports, the man had kept largely to himself for years and was rarely seen leaving his flat. Neighbours described him as a quiet individual who seldom received visitors, with many saying they knew very little about his personal life.

Welfare group steps in after family refuses assistance

Marine Parade-Braddell Heights GRC MP Tin Pei Ling said the man had been receiving support under the Silver Support Scheme and had long been estranged from his family.

She explained that the relevant authorities had contacted the deceased’s relatives, but they declined requests to identify his body or take responsibility for his funeral arrangements.

As a result, Cheng Hong Welfare Service Society has stepped forward to handle the funeral. Tin also shared that arrangements would be made to clear the large number of belongings the man had accumulated inside his flat over the years.

Neighbour recalls attempts to contact daughter

A neighbour who lived next door said the elderly man had been divorced for several years and appeared to have little contact with his family.

She recalled that after the man suffered a fall and was hospitalised some time ago, he had asked for help contacting his daughter. Despite her efforts, she was unable to get through to her.

According to the neighbour, the elderly man later told her there was no longer any need to continue trying to reach his daughter, suggesting that communication with his family had already broken down.

Community saddened by lonely final chapter

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges faced by some elderly residents who live alone, particularly those without close family support. Social isolation among seniors remains a concern, with welfare groups and community organisations often stepping in when vulnerable individuals have no one to rely on.

While investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, the focus has also shifted towards ensuring the man receives a proper send-off despite the absence of family involvement.

The case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of community support networks for seniors who may be living in isolation, as neighbours and welfare organisations are sometimes the only people able to provide assistance during their final moments and after their passing.
