Need to rant because I really cannot understand this kind of mentality.
One of my friends, already over 30 years old, recently messaged me asking if I could lend him $150. Normally, if someone genuinely kena emergency, like medical bills or no money until cannot eat, I’ll probably help if I can.
But this fellow?
He literally gambled away his money during the World Cup. Every few days he was posting betting slips, talking big about “confirm win”, “inside information”, “sure got value”. End up losing until fingers burned, and suddenly I’m supposed to become his ATM.
The funniest thing is this isn’t even the first time.
His bank account is basically always close to zero. Salary comes in, disappear within days. Somehow every month got money for gambling, drinking and nightlife, but when real life expenses come, suddenly become everyone’s problem.
What really makes me shake my head is how he behaves in pubs.
Whenever we go out, he likes to act like some high roller. Hanging flower for hostesses, ordering drinks loudly, talking until the whole pub can hear him. If you don’t know him, you’ll think he spends thousands every night.
Reality?
Most of the time he’s counting every dollar the next morning.
He genuinely believes the hostesses like him because they smile, laugh at his jokes and call him “handsome”. Bro… they’re literally working. They’re being friendly because it’s part of the job.
One time after he walked away, one of the girls quietly told another staff member that he was “damn loser” because he kept showing off despite obviously not having much money.
Honestly, hearing that was quite sad.
Not because of what she said, but because he has absolutely zero self-awareness.
He’s over 30. No savings. No investments. No emergency fund. Every month living paycheck to paycheck. Yet he still wants to maintain this fake VIP image in front of strangers who probably won’t even remember his name the next day.
Then he wonders why he cannot find a girlfriend.
Bro, it’s not because you’re unlucky.
Most women don’t expect you to be rich. But they do expect someone who is responsible, financially stable and mature enough to manage their own life.
If you’re constantly borrowing money after gambling losses, pretending to be a big shot in pubs, and spending beyond your means just to impress people, that’s a much bigger problem than your looks.
I didn’t lend him the $150.
Maybe some people will say I’m not being a good friend. But personally, I feel lending money to cover gambling losses is just encouraging the behaviour. Today it’s $150. Next month maybe $300. Then $500.
Where does it end?
Curious to hear what everyone thinks.
Would you lend money to a friend who lost it through gambling? Or once gambling is involved, is it an automatic “no”?
