Her father and mother are hardcore chronic gamblers. The mother can play mahjong non-stop day and night, sound of the tiles rolling 24/7 in the HDB. The father even worse—always betting on God knows what house, horse racing, English Premier League football, 4D, Toto, everything also want to bet.
Few months ago, my father-in-law asked me to help him sign in Singpass for a personal loan or whatever. At that time, he gave me some cock-and-bull story that his bank account got frozen because of some technical error and he needed urgent cash flow for his small business. Because I wanted to be a “good son-in-law” and my wife was crying, begging me to help her father, I stupidly agreed and became a guarantor/co-applicant. Yes, call me bodoh, call me naive, I know I am the idiot here.
Now, guess what? The old man completely default. Ghosted the bank and went missing. Every single day, collection agencies and debt collectors are calling my phone till it explodes. My handphone ring until I get anxiety attack. They even started sending warning letters to my own unit.
I talked to my wife about this and told her we need to go police or force her father to sell his flat to settle. You know what she said? She accused me of being cold-blooded and not treating her family like “real family.” She actually wants me to just suck it up and help her father clear the debt using my own hard-earned savings!
I really, really regret marrying her. Love is truly blind. Now my credit score is crushed, my mental health in the drain, and my marriage is basically dead.
Anybody got experience with collection agencies or debt issues like this? How to legally protect myself from this toxic circus? Help a brother out, sibei stressed already.
