Gunman Dies After Deadly Temple Shooting Sparks Overnight Police Siege In Bangkok
A man accused of carrying out a fatal shooting at a temple in Bangkok has died after allegedly taking his own life while surrounded by police during an overnight standoff.
The incident began on the evening of 2 August at Wat Bueng Thong Lang in Bangkok’s Bang Kapi district, where one man was killed and two others were injured.
Police later tracked the suspected gunman to a rented apartment, leading to a tense hours-long siege involving around 100 special operations officers.
One Dead, Two Injured In Temple Shooting
According to Thai police, the suspect allegedly opened fire at the temple at around 5pm, killing one man and injuring two others before fleeing the scene.
Authorities identified the suspect as 23-year-old Noparat Muhammad Aree, also known as “Bang San”.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a personal dispute between the suspect and the deceased victim.
After the shooting, the suspect allegedly fled with his wife to a rented apartment in Bangkok’s Khannayao district.
Police Surround Apartment Before Gunshots Heard
Police located the couple at a flat inside the Eua Arthorn residential complex on Soi Khu Bon 27.
Bangkok Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Sayam Boonsom led approximately 100 special operations officers to surround the building as negotiations continued.
At around 2.14am, officers reported hearing two gunshots from inside the apartment.
Shortly afterwards, the suspect’s wife emerged from the flat in tears and informed officers that her husband had shot himself.
He was rushed to Synphaet Ramintra Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 3.45am.
Investigation Ongoing
Police said investigations into the shooting remain ongoing.
Authorities are continuing to gather evidence surrounding the fatal temple shooting and the events leading up to the overnight siege.
No further details about the injured victims have been released.
