Man Arrested Within Three Hours After S$1,685 Gold Chain Allegedly Snatched at Chinatown Supermarket

A 34-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly snatching a gold chain worth S$1,685 from another man inside a supermarket along Chin Swee Road.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said the suspect was tracked down and arrested within three hours of the incident after officers reviewed CCTV footage and images captured by police cameras.

The stolen gold chain was successfully recovered and has been seized as evidence for the ongoing court proceedings.

Victim Reported Missing Gold Chain

According to police investigations, the incident occurred on the night of July 30 when a 59-year-old man was shopping at a supermarket along Chin Swee Road.

The victim was wearing a gold chain valued at S$1,685 when another man allegedly approached him, forcibly pulled the jewellery from his neck and fled the scene.

After realising that his gold chain had been taken, the victim contacted the police at approximately 10.45pm to report the incident.

Police officers from the Central Police Division and Ang Mo Kio Police Division immediately launched investigations.

CCTV Footage Helped Police Identify Suspect

Investigators carried out extensive ground enquiries and analysed footage obtained from police cameras as well as the supermarket’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) system.

These efforts enabled officers to identify the suspect, a 34-year-old man, who was arrested within three hours of the police report being lodged.

The stolen gold chain was recovered during the investigation and has been retained by the authorities as a case exhibit.

The swift arrest highlights the effectiveness of Singapore’s extensive surveillance network and rapid police response in solving street crime.

Suspect Charged in Court

The accused was charged in court on Aug. 1 with the offence of using criminal force in committing theft of property carried by a person under Section 356 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, he faces a prison sentence ranging from one to seven years. The offence also carries mandatory caning.

As with all criminal cases, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.

Police Urge Public to Stay Alert

The Singapore Police Force said it takes a serious view of snatch thefts and other violent crimes committed in public places.

Police stressed that they will continue to pursue offenders aggressively and work closely with community partners to prevent such incidents from occurring.

Members of the public are advised to remain calm if they encounter a snatch theft. Where possible, they should observe the suspect’s physical appearance, clothing and any distinctive features without putting themselves at risk, before contacting the police immediately.

Prompt reporting and accurate descriptions can significantly improve the chances of identifying suspects and recovering stolen property.
