A Singapore driver said he lost his patience with a group of young cyclists after one allegedly continued riding through a traffic light at a Woodlands junction.
The incident reportedly happened in Woodlands, near the stadium, at the section where motorists can turn towards the stadium.
According to a conversation shared on Aug. 11, the driver said he was waiting to turn left at a traffic junction when several cyclists moved through the junction ahead of him.
He said he initially decided not to react even as the cyclists continued riding while the traffic light countdown approached its final seconds.
Cyclist allegedly rides through after countdown hits zero
The driver claimed that when the countdown reached “3-2-1”, the cyclists should have stopped, but they continued moving through the junction.
Things became more concerning when the driver began moving off after the light had changed.
According to his account, one of the cyclists then allegedly sped through the junction without looking, despite the countdown having already reached zero.
The driver said he wound down his car window and shouted at the teenagers, telling them to look at the traffic light.
When asked about their ages, he estimated that the cyclists were at least of lower-secondary school age.
He added that if they had been younger children, he would have directed his anger towards their parents instead.
Driver says wife told him to relax
The driver said his wife subsequently told him to calm down after the incident.
However, he explained that his reaction was largely driven by concerns about what could happen if he collided with one of the cyclists.
“If I knock them, no matter what is my fault,” he said.
Another person in the conversation agreed that giving the cyclists a verbal warning could potentially make them more cautious in future.
The person suggested that if nobody told the teenagers that their behaviour was dangerous, they might continue making the same mistake without realising the potential consequences.
Woodlands junction highlights importance of caution
The incident, as recounted by the driver, highlights the risks that can arise when cyclists and motorists share busy junctions.
While the driver’s account has not been independently verified, the situation serves as a reminder that cyclists should pay close attention to traffic signals and check for vehicles before entering a junction.
Younger cyclists may also have less experience judging the speed and distance of approaching vehicles, making caution particularly important around busy roads.
For motorists, meanwhile, unexpected movements by cyclists can leave little time to react.
