A six-vehicle collision in Geylang caused major disruption on Friday evening (Aug 14), after five cars and a motorcycle were involved in a crash that left three lanes temporarily impassable.
The accident happened at about 5.55pm along Geylang East Central towards Sims Avenue. A 67-year-old male car driver was taken to Changi General Hospital while conscious. He was later assisting police with their investigations.
A reader who witnessed the incident told Chinese-language media that he had been cycling along a nearby pavement when he suddenly heard several loud crashes followed by braking sounds. When he looked towards the road, he saw a motorcycle lying on the ground and several damaged vehicles.
Vehicles Left Across Three Lanes
The collision resulted in vehicles coming to a stop across all three lanes, preventing traffic from passing through normally. Motorists behind the crash were forced to wait while the damaged vehicles were dealt with and removed from the road.
Photographs and videos circulating online showed debris scattered across the carriageway, with substantial damage visible on several of the vehicles. An ambulance was also seen arriving at the scene, while traffic police officers attended to manage the situation.
The Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force confirmed that they had been alerted to the incident. According to the authorities, the crash involved five cars and one motorcycle.
Car Crashes Into Lamp Post
The impact appears to have been significant, with at least two vehicles reportedly being spun around by the force of the collision. One car also struck a roadside lamp post, leaving its front end badly damaged.
Images from the scene showed the lamp post visibly bent following the impact. Other vehicles involved in the accident also suffered varying degrees of damage, while the motorcycle remained overturned on the road.
The 67-year-old driver was conveyed to Changi General Hospital in a conscious state. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the multi-vehicle accident are ongoing.
The crash also serves as a reminder of the risks associated with heavy evening traffic, particularly when several vehicles are travelling close together. A sudden braking incident or lane movement can quickly result in a chain collision involving multiple road users.
Motorists travelling through Geylang and other busy Singapore roads are advised to maintain a safe following distance, remain alert to sudden changes in traffic and avoid making abrupt lane changes where possible.
