Amos Yee, 27, is set to appear in court on Aug. 26 over several alleged offences involving content published online, including comments which police said were “alarming and racially divisive”.
Singapore Police said on Aug. 25 that several reports had been lodged against Yee between April and July 2026. Investigations were subsequently carried out into the material he allegedly published on his personal blog and social media.
The upcoming charges relate to two broad areas: alleged attempts to promote racial disharmony and allegedly indecent online communications.
Alleged comments about Singapore’s racial communities
Police said Yee published two blog posts on Apr. 7 and Apr. 11 in which he allegedly claimed that Singapore’s Malay-Muslim and Indian communities faced significant discrimination from the Chinese majority.
He also allegedly made comments concerning the Singapore Government’s treatment of these communities and called for protests against the authorities.
Police said Yee repeated similar sentiments in a video published on May 27.
If convicted of knowingly attempting to promote feelings of enmity, hatred or ill-will between different racial groups, he could face up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
The case comes amid Singapore’s strict laws governing online content that authorities consider capable of undermining racial or religious harmony.
Separate allegations involving children and sexual acts
Yee is also facing an allegation over content published on his blog on Jun. 30.
According to police, he allegedly stated that children were capable of consenting to sexual acts and advocated abolishing laws relating to the age of consent for sexual activity involving children.
Police noted that this was not the first time Yee had allegedly published similar views. In 2021, he made three videos in which he advocated sexual relationships involving children and called for the abolition of laws prohibiting child sexual abuse material.
For the latest alleged online communication offence, Yee could face a fine of up to S$5,000 if convicted.
Authorities order removal of online content
Authorities have also taken steps to restrict access to some of the material.
Police said an OCHA Disabling Direction was issued on Aug. 18 requiring X to disable a video allegedly linked to the case. The social media platform complied with the direction.
For other content published on Yee’s personal blog, he was issued Stop Communication Directions requiring him to remove the posts.
Yee is expected to face the new charges in court on Aug. 26.
Separately, he is scheduled to plead guilty on Sep. 7 to offences relating to his National Service obligations. He was previously charged in March with three offences connected to his NS requirements.
The latest proceedings add to Yee’s lengthy history of legal troubles in Singapore and the United States, with the authorities now focusing on alleged online conduct involving racial harmony and indecent communications.
