Woman Steals Newborn From Philippines Hospital By Hiding Infant In Shopping Bag

A woman has been arrested after allegedly taking a newborn baby from a public hospital in Mabalacat City, Pampanga, Philippines, before placing the infant inside a shopping bag and leaving the premises.

The incident reportedly happened at around 1.20am on 17 August, while the baby’s parents were asleep in the hospital ward.

Police later located the woman in a neighbouring town and safely recovered the newborn, who was subsequently returned to the parents.

The suspect and her husband are now facing charges relating to the alleged abduction, while authorities are also examining whether there were security shortcomings at the hospital.

Suspect Allegedly Wrapped Baby In Shawl

According to police, the woman entered the hospital ward and took the newborn while the parents were sleeping.

She reportedly wrapped the baby in a shawl before placing the infant inside a shopping bag. This allegedly allowed her to leave the hospital without immediately attracting attention.

CCTV footage reportedly captured the woman leaving the hospital and getting onto a motorised tricycle.

Police said a person had witnessed her taking the baby but did not intervene because they believed she was a relative of the child’s parents.

The suspect had reportedly visited the baby’s hospital room earlier that evening and spoken with the parents. She had also carried the newborn, allegedly giving the impression that she knew the family.

Police Quickly Locate Missing Newborn

Once the baby’s disappearance was discovered, police launched an investigation and began searching for the suspect.

Authorities eventually located the woman in a nearby town and recovered the newborn safely.

The child was subsequently reunited with the parents.

The incident has raised questions about security procedures at the hospital, particularly how the woman was able to enter the ward, take the newborn and leave the premises with the infant.

Authorities are expected to investigate whether additional security measures could have prevented the incident.

Suspect Had Reportedly Lost Her Own Child

Police said the suspect was a former overseas worker who had previously lost her own child.

Mabalacat Police Chief Lt Col Jose Charlmar Gundaya reportedly said investigators believed the loss may have been connected to her actions.

However, the reported suggestion about her mental state remains an assessment by police rather than a confirmed medical diagnosis.

Authorities will need to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction as the investigation continues.

The case has also drawn attention to the importance of newborn security in hospitals, where infants are particularly vulnerable to being removed by unauthorised individuals.

Husband Also Faces Charges

The suspect’s husband is reportedly believed to have been involved in the incident.

Both individuals face charges relating to kidnapping and human trafficking, according to local authorities.

Investigators will examine their respective roles and determine what happened before, during and after the newborn was taken from the hospital.

The authorities are also looking into the hospital’s security arrangements to determine whether there were any lapses that allowed the incident to occur.

For the baby’s parents, the immediate outcome was a safe reunion with their child after police recovered the newborn.

Further proceedings will determine the circumstances of the alleged abduction and whether the charges against the two suspects will proceed in court.
