Indian national, 25, charged with murder of 29-year-old man in Tuas
A 25-year-old Indian national has been charged with murder following the death of a 29-year-old man in Singapore’s Tuas industrial area.
Muruganathan Kathirvel is accused of causing the death of Raj Maheshkumar by allegedly slashing him around the neck with a chopper along Tuas South Avenue 9 on Aug. 29.
The charge was filed in court on Aug. 31, two days after the incident.
Police found victim lying motionless on road
According to the charge sheet, police received a call for assistance at around 10.10pm on Aug. 29 along Tuas South Street 15 towards Tuas South Avenue 14.
Officers who arrived at the scene found the 29-year-old man lying motionless on the road.
A Singapore Civil Defence Force paramedic subsequently pronounced him dead at the scene.
Police said the 25-year-old suspect was arrested within four hours of the incident.
Suspect and victim were known to each other
Preliminary police investigations found that Kathirvel and Maheshkumar were known to each other.
Kathirvel is expected to return to court in September as legal proceedings continue.
The murder charge carries the death penalty under Singapore law. As the case is before the courts, the allegations against Kathirvel have not been proven and he remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
