Mount Sinabung Erupts In Indonesia, Sending Volcanic Ash 3.5km Into The Sky

Indonesia is facing another natural hazard as Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra erupted on Monday (Aug 31), sending a thick column of volcanic ash approximately 3.5km above the volcano’s summit.

The eruption took place in Karo Regency, where Mount Sinabung remains under an Alert Level II classification. Authorities have urged residents, visitors and tourists to stay away from designated danger zones around the volcano as monitoring continues.

According to Indonesia’s Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption began at about 10.17am local time. A dense, dark column of ash was observed rising from the volcano before drifting towards the east and south-east.

Residents and tourists in the wider Karo area have been encouraged to follow official instructions and avoid entering areas that have been identified as unsafe.

While the eruption sent ash several kilometres into the atmosphere, authorities are also monitoring the possibility of volcanic mudflows.

Residents living near rivers that originate from Mount Sinabung have been told to remain vigilant. Heavy rainfall can potentially mobilise volcanic material deposited around a volcano, creating fast-moving flows through river channels.
