Singapore runner, 26, charged over alleged theft of S$140 running shoes and training cones from Decathlon
A 26-year-old Singapore distance runner has been charged with allegedly stealing a pair of running shoes and a set of training cones from a Decathlon outlet in Kallang.
Ko Wen Qiang, also known as Keane, allegedly took a pair of KD900X running shoes worth S$139.90 from the sports retailer in July 2025, according to charge sheets reported by local media.
He is also accused of taking a set of training cones worth S$25 from the same outlet two months later.
The alleged offences took place separately in 2025, with Ko subsequently charged in court on July 1, 2026.
Runner represented Singapore at international event
Ko is an established distance runner who has represented Singapore at international competitions.
Singapore Athletics said he competed in the men’s half marathon at the 2023 World Athletics Road Running Championships, completing the race in approximately one hour and 21 minutes.
He also finished second in the 2024 Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon half marathon national championships.
Ko had previously spoken publicly about his ambitions as a competitive distance runner and his efforts to train overseas.
According to a January 2026 report by The Straits Times, Ko had been based in Slovenia since late October 2025. He was reportedly working remotely as a business developer for companies in Singapore and Slovenia while continuing his running career.
Alleged thefts from Decathlon
The first alleged theft involved the KD900X running shoes, which were valued at S$139.90.
The second allegation concerns a set of training cones worth S$25. Both alleged incidents involved the same Decathlon outlet in Kallang.
Ko’s case had a further mention hearing on September 4, 2026. He is due to return to court on October 2.
The charge carries potentially serious consequences. If convicted of theft in dwelling, he could face up to seven years’ imprisonment and a fine.
However, the charges are allegations, and Ko is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Had trained overseas and was a shoe brand ambassador
Ko had reportedly joined a training camp in Celje, Slovenia, from May to July 2025 as he pursued qualification for the marathon at the 2025 SEA Games.
His time in Slovenia later became part of his wider training and professional plans, with his work commitments allowing him to remain based overseas while maintaining his running career.
His Instagram profile, which was taken down on September 4, also reportedly described him as an ambassador for a shoe brand.
The development has drawn attention given Ko’s background in competitive running and his previous association with the sports footwear industry.
It remains unclear from the available court information what circumstances allegedly led to the two incidents at the Decathlon outlet.
Ko’s case remains before the Singapore courts, with his next court appearance scheduled for October 2, 2026.
