3 VIETNAMESE AND 1 SINGAPOREAN ARRESTED FOR PEDDLING CONTRABAND CIGARETTES

According to a Facebook post by the Singapore Customs, an operation was conducted on the 9 of March leading to the arrest of four suspects.

The operation lasted 3 hours, leading to the arrest of 3 Vietnamese and 1 Singaporean.

A photo of what appears to be a Telegram chat was posted, showing a man advertising for the sale of contraband cigarettes.

Singapore Customs conducted a three-hour operation on 9 March 2020 and arrested three Vietnamese and a Singaporean, at three different locations for peddling duty-unpaid cigarettes. Court proceedings against three men are on-going while investigation is on-going for the remaining Vietnamese offender.

Buying, selling, conveying, delivering, storing, keeping, having in possession or dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the GST Act.

Offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to six years. Vehicles used in the commission of such offences are also liable to be forfeited.
