PROSECUTION SEEKING HEAVIER SENTENCE FOR AMKTC CORRUPTION CASE

According to the media release, Victor Wong Chee Meng, 60, and Chia Sin Lan, 65, are set to appeal for a shorter jail term for their involvement in corruption relating to the Ang Mo Kio Town Council. The 2 men were sentenced with 27 months and 21 months jail term respectively.

However, the prosecution had requested for their jail terms to be increased to 48 months and 44 months respectively. These men are involved in bribery which involves more than $86,000. The bribery came in many forms, $34,000 of which are in the form of entertainment such as KTV, massages, restaurants and even get a discount for car purchase.

In return, Chia Sin Lan will be awarded government’s contracts from the Ang Mo Kio Town Council.

During the appeal, the lawyers of both men requested for their jail terms to be reduced to 14 months and 12 months respectively. One of the lawyers had stated that ‘No harm’ was caused throughout the event.

Anyone who was convicted of corruption can be jailed for up to 5 years and $100,000 fine or both. As this case involved government contracts, a maximum penalty of 7 years jail and a fine up to $100,000 could have been given.
