34 YEAR OLD MAN CHARGED OVER RACIST TWEETS UNDER PSEUDONYM “SHARON LIEW”

“Sharon Liew” has been charged in court.

Earlier today (July 2), Zainal Abidin Shaiful Bahari, a 34 year old man was charged in court over stoking racial tensions online under the pseudonym “Sharon Liew”.

Zainal faced 4 charges, all relating to committing acts promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race and commiting acts of prejudice to disrupt racial harmony.

The police first received a report about a Twitter user posting offensive content again Indian migrant workers, under the username “@SharonLiew86”, on April 18.

“Sharon” also allegedly posted another tweet on October 11, 2019, stating that malay students in the different academic streams were not on the same pedestal as their Chinese peers.

He also ellegedly posted a tweet referring to Indians as shooting targets.

If found guilty, Zainal could be jailed up to three years, fined, or both.

The police said on Wednesday they will not condone acts that threaten racial and religious harmony in Singapore.

“Any person who makes remarks that can cause ill-will and hostility between the different races and religions will be dealt with swiftly and firmly.”
