In a joint release by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) and the Ministry of Education (MOE), they announced that all travellers arriving in Singapore will have to put on the new monitoring device if they are not at the designated facilities serving their Stay Home Notice (SHN).
The new requirements apply to all Singaporeans, Permanent Residents, Student Pass/Work Pass holders as well as their dependents, which will start from August 10, 11.59pm onwards.
Speculation has been rife about what the device would look like, with many speculating that it would look like the tagging that people serving probation would wear on their ankles.
However, the new device looks like a wristband. In black. And it comes with a gateway device to communicate with the “wristband”.
If the device isn’t activated as required, the authorities would take action to determine where they are or take enforcement action if need be.
The monitoring device is compulsory to be worn by those serving their SHN outside designated facilities throughout the 14 day duration and they are required to acknowledge notifications the device receives in a timely manner.
Attempting to tamper the device would trigger an alert to the authorities.
The new device also uses GPS and 4G/Bluetooth technology to determine if the people on SHN are within their designated range and they do not store any personal data, or have voice/video recording capabilities.
Data that is transmitted from the devices are encrypted.
