VOLUNTEER “INTIMIDATED” BY DEBT COLLECTOR SENT BY MT PLEASANT VET CENTRE

Purrs & Meows, a self-funded voluntary organisation run by a single volunteer, helping to feed and treat stray cats as well as re-homing them, shared her exchange with a debt collector.

She (the volunteer) said that there was no paint-splashing or any traditional loan-shark harassment but the debt collector engaged her with subtle “gangsterism”.

She alleged that the debt collector gave her a 5pm deadline but “sneakily” did a site visit before the deadline to paste a notice at her home.

She added that despite having more than half of the bill paid, Mt Pleasant Vet Centre still sent a debt collector.

She advised future rescuers who face owing money to vet clinics to not promise a fixed amount because “you will end up funding for the next cat and the next and the next and may not get donations to cover some of your cases.”

She also revealed that as much as she loves cats and wants to help, she can’t bear the pain and heartache that her family has to go through; therefore she is quitting Purrs & Meows.

She will however continue to pay off the debt and take care of the cats that are still under her care.
