
According to a media release, 3 men were arrested for their suspected involvement in distributing contraband cigarettes at various locations in Singapore. The 3 suspects consist of 2 Singaporeans and 1 Chinese national.

The 3 suspects were arrested in Woodlands and Simei respectively. In the process, 2,700 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes were seized. The total amount of Goods and Services Tax (GST) evaded was estimated at about $255,510.

According to the Customs Act and the GST Act, having in possession or distributing of duty-unpaid products is a serious offence. Anyone convicted could be jailed for up to 6 years, fined up to 40 times the duty GST evaded or both.
