An NTU graduate recently took to Facebook to voice his displeasure after experiencing first hand on how the SGTraineeship program is being used by companies to get cheap labour.

“Hi everyone,I am from class of 2020. It has been tough for all the graduated students in this difficult time, other then those have scholarship bonds.
I took up the SGTraineeship programme with this company. I was told that my company has no intention to convert me to full time job despite I helped my company to solve a lot of issues and initiated new ways to streamline the processes. The HR who is my close colleague told me that this company has never thought of hiring full time while acknowledge my outstanding contributions. They were just using the traineeship to get “cheap” labour because the government is covering the cost. I hope the class of 2021 will be wise in taking up “traineeship” programme if ever this is going to continue next year. A lot of companies are abusing this programme to reduce manpower cost. Yes, I agree that I can beef up my resume but that’s not the point. The point is to be street smart and work smart. Many of my graduated friends echoed the same situation from their company. We are a new generation with new thinking. We have to be wise in choosing our career path.
If possible, please do not go for traineeship as it has no guarantee of getting full-time job. Truth to be told, I am FCH. If I can turn back the clock, I would have opted for postgrad studies to avoid chaotic job market. I am glad that I am able to secure a full time job from another company. Sadly to say that my friends never have a same fate as me.
I wish to my juniors a fair winds and following seas. Difficult time like this will rise a stronger generation. The world will always be our oyster, and we can make the next generation to enjoy our fruits of labour.”
