According to a media release, the Johor State Government has requested an RM30 million (S$9.88M) to be allocated to the construction of a sheltered pathway on the causeway.
The request was submitted to the federal government earlier this year and is currently pending for review.
Initially, the cost to build the pathway was RM15 million but due to a re-design to include escalators and air conditioning the cost to build was doubled. The path will be 350 meters long and it will end at the border of Singapore.
Singapore has also expressed interest to be part of the project. The Singapore government has asked for a proposal to be submitted as the Singaporean government is also concerned about the people are walking across the causeway on a daily basis.
The project will commence as soon as approval is obtained
