Facebook user Rebecca Ong appealed on the Facebook group, Sayang Our Singapore’s Community Cats, urging Bukit Merah residents to help look out for a missing cat who was allegedly “kidnapped” and killed by a shop owner.
The cat was taken care by an elderly couple who own a shop at Jalan Bukit Merah for many years.
However, on that fateful day, the elderly couple’s shop was closed for the day, so the cat entered another shop run by a couple from China.
Ong alleges that the shop owners tied a plastic bag around the cat’s neck and placed it in a rice sack as the helpless kitty meowed desperately for help.
She said that “nobody there then had the courage to stop them except for a passerby asking them to release the cat”.
The shop owner then returned 20 minutes later drenched in sweat, but he returned without the rice sack.
The police were informed and the shop owner admitted to tying the cat’s neck with a bag and into a rice sack; he also said that he “released” the cat at Cendex Centre, which is a 10 minutes walk away from his shop.
